Event Description
Join UMACHA & our partners WesPay as we dive deep into the world of elder financial exploitation.

Every year, 10% of adults aged 65 and older will experience some form of elder abuse, with some older adults simultaneously experiencing multiple forms of abuse. Elders who are dependent on others for their basic needs, and those who are isolated, lonely, or suffer from cognitive impairment are even more vulnerable to financial exploitation. Financial services companies like yours play a crucial role in preventing elder financial abuse, as well as flagging and halting abuse when it occurs.  Industry experts from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the criminal justice system give you tools to help increase the effectiveness of your current elder protection programs. Topics will include recognizing and responding to current scams, best practices for working with APS and law enforcement, and possible new laws on holding financial institutions liable for elder financial abuse. We’ll end the morning with an informative Q&A panel discussion.

Agenda includes:
  • Understanding the CFPB’s Role and Office of Older Americans - Jenefer Duane, CFPB
  • Types of Abuse an Elder May Experience - Larry ‘Skip’ Swain, Fresno County Sheriff’s Office
  • Best Practices for FIs Dealing with Elder Abuse - Andrea Higgens Paugh, San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office
  • Are you doing Everything Possible to Assist your Older Account Holders? - Paul Greenwood, Retired Deputy District Attorney
  • Panel Discuss with Speakers
